If you are installing a new septic system or connecting to sanitary sewer, you will need to obtain a permit to properly abandon your current system. After you receive the abandonment permit, an inspector will request a receipt showing that the system has been pumped. The top of the tank must be crushed in and the tank filled with an inert material such as gravel or dirt. If any plumbing was relocated or rerouted, it must also be inspected.
