If you…

  • don’t like exercise classes or gyms
  • don’t think you have time for physical activity
  • are tired, stressed or lonely
  • are afraid of failure and need inspiration or direction
  • think it’s too late to change your habits

…then Active for Life is for you!

How it works

Active for Life® is not a one-size-fits-all exercise class; it’s a flexible program that helps you learn the skills you need to become and stay more physically active. This program is brought to you by Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, Hamilton County General Health District, and YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. Support comes from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the U.S. Administration on Aging and Ohio Department of Aging, Cooperative Agreement 90AM3119/01.

Active for Life proves that physical activity does not need to be strenuous or time-consuming to achieve health benefits. The program motivates participants and assists them in developing the behavioral skills needed to build moderate to vigorous physical activity into their everyday lives. Participants use the Active Living Everyday - 20 Steps to Lifelong Vitality workbook published by Human Kinetics, Inc.

Participants meet in small groups of 10-20 people weekly for 60-90 minutes over a 13 or 20-week period. The program is led by a certified Active for Life facilitator who can help you set and achieve your physical activity goals. Registration for class is $15 dollars and includes class instruction, workbook and pedometer. Registration and eligibility screening are required for participation.

During the class, you will learn:

  • the benefits of regular physical activity
  • how to set goals and reward yourself
  • how to overcome personal barriers to being active
  • how to fit physical activity into your busy schedule
  • stress management

Proven health benefits

A report published in the American Journal of Public Health has concluded that the Active for Life program is effective at helping senior adults increase their overall physical activity and improve their quality of life. The report examined results from the program's first year and found:

  • significant increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and total physical activity
  • increases in satisfaction with body appearance and function
