Be physically active without ever leaving your chair!

Hamilton County Public Health organizes a Chair Volleyball League for Hamilton County's older adults. Staff provide orientations, coaches' manuals, and help organize league play.

How it works

Chair Volleyball is just like regular volleyball…

  • Six players on the court
  • Score only while serving
  • 15 points or a margin of two wins
  • Competitive camaraderie
  • Teams, practices, games

…but different!

  • Smaller court
  • Lower net
  • Sit to play
  • Serve rotates; players don’t
  • 20 inch inflatable beach ball

Chair Volleyball is for older adults of all activity levels - regularly active to wheelchair bound. Through the chair volleyball league, hundreds of players participate in matches at over a dozen sites countywide. Players hail from senior, community, recreation and assisted living centers, churches and retirement communities. Teams practice weekly throughout the year, and league play takes place from March until October. Teams are not required to participate in league play; they can choose to enjoy the health benefits of chair volleyball at their own facilities.

Health benefits

There are many mental and physical health benefits associated with playing Chair Volleyball:

  • Promotes camaraderie
  • Reduces stress
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Increases upper body flexibility
  • Enhances muscle tone and endurance
  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem

The Chair Volleyball season closes each fall with a social event that includes a tournament or exhibition (non-competitive) play and an awards banquet. A mid-year social is also scheduled to allow teams a day of open play for all Chair Volleyball sites.

Advisory Board

The Hamilton County Chair Volleyball Advisory Board (CVAB) was created by Hamilton County Public Health to be called upon to address issues or concerns that arise during the season, assist with events, research other playing opportunities, and be a part of coordinating the League.

Chair Volleyball started in 1997 by Hamilton County Public Health (HCPH) with the goals to promote physical activity and social connectedness among older adults in our community. HCPH encourages older adults to exercise, socialize and play as much Chair Volleyball as possible with the expectation that it should be fun for everyone who participates and that we want everyone to participate as much as they would like. Find out more by reading our bylaws.
